Because of the renewed interest in field corn production in the region, the West Florida Research and Education Center (WFREC) conducted a variety test for the first time in 15 years. The corn varieties we are planting today are not the varieties planted by our grandfathers. Many of the newer varieties have increased yields significantly over the varieties available 15 years ago.
The WFREC Field Corn Variety Trial consisted of 17 varieties, planted March 29, 2013 with a split harvest date of August 27 and September 6. The adverse weather conditions this season delayed harvest and suppressed yields significantly. Even so, the corn varieties tested provided yields that ranged from 102 – 158 bushels per acre this year.
